What It Is

What is Visceral Manipulation?

Developed by Jean-Pierre Barral, DO, Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a gentle, hands-on approach that assesses and treats the internal organs (viscera) and their connective-tissue attachments to the rest of the body.

The premise is simple: your organs are designed to move — sliding against one another and surrounding structures with every breath and step. When an organ becomes restricted by trauma, surgery, infection or prolonged postural stress, it creates tension throughout the body. That tension often shows up as musculoskeletal pain — far from the organ itself.

Your body holds the memory of every injury, surgery and stressor. VM helps us listen to what your tissues are telling us.

What taping does

Taping can provide support without restricting movement, or restrict movement where needed — reducing pain, improving postural awareness and muscle activation, and promoting circulation and healing.

When we use it

Whether you’re recovering from a sports injury, managing chronic joint pain, or needing postural support through a long workday, taping can reduce injury risk and allow a safe return to activity.
How We Use It

Integrated, never in isolation

If we suspect a visceral component, VM is used alongside the rest of your plan, within our ConnectTherapy™ whole-body approach.

Manual therapy

Combined with myofascial release to address tension throughout the body.

Movement retraining

Clinical Pilates and movement work to rebuild healthy patterns.

Dry needling

Muscle activation and release where needles can help.

Exercise rehab

Strengthening and self-management strategies to make gains last.
Is It Right For You?

VM may help if you have

We assess first, then recommend — VM isn’t for every condition, but when indicated it can be the missing piece of your recovery.
  • Persistent pain unresolved by standard physio
  • A history of car accident, fall or torso trauma
  • Postural problems that feel ‘stuck’
  • A history of abdominal or pelvic surgery
  • Digestive or bladder issues alongside your complaint
  • Pain that keeps returning to the same spot

VM is gentle, non-invasive and often deeply relaxing — never forceful, just targeted. Most patients notice improvements within a few sessions. Our physiotherapists Christine Potter and Sylvia Yong-Gonzales are trained to perform Visceral Manipulation.

Real-Time Ultrasound Machine (RTUS)

Our latest addition to our clinic is this wonderful machine. The RTUS is used to assess and train a person’s deep core muscles (transversus abdominis/multifidus) and pelvic floor muscles.

This machine works just like the one for pregnant women, but the emphasis is on muscles. The screen will show the specific muscles and then the training will be directed by one of our qualified physiotherapists.

The RTUS is ideal for:

  • People with neck pain and lower back pain
  • Pre and Post-Pregnancy
  • Pre and Post-Spinal Surgery
  • People with Incontinence (Stress and Urgency)
  • Women with organ Prolapse
