The Technique

What is dry needling?

An evidence-based method for releasing tight bands of muscle that cause local or referred pain.

Releasing trigger points

Dry needling involves inserting sterile, fine needles into trigger points — tight bands of muscle that can cause local pain or referred discomfort.

Our physiotherapists integrate it into personalised rehabilitation programs to accelerate recovery, ease chronic tightness and support long-term injury prevention.

Not the same as acupuncture

Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling at Lively is grounded in Western anatomy, physiology and neuroscience.

It is particularly effective when manual therapy, stretching or exercise aren’t quite enough on their own.
How It Works

What happens during treatment

When the needle reaches a trigger point it often produces a brief local twitch — the moment the muscle resets.

1

Needle inserted

A fine, sterile, single-use needle is placed precisely into the trigger point.

2

Local twitch response

A brief, involuntary spasm helps the muscle release its contraction and tension.

3

Reset & repair

Nerve irritation settles and the body's natural repair mechanisms are stimulated.

The Benefits

Why dry needling helps

Releases deep knots

Reaches stubborn muscle knots and trigger points that hands-on treatment alone can’t fully release.

Improves blood flow

Boosts circulation and tissue oxygenation to support healing in the treated area.

Resets the muscle

Helps reset neuromuscular activation patterns and reduce inflammation and irritation.

Speeds recovery

Supports faster recovery after sports or workplace injuries when paired with rehab.
What It Treats

Dry needling can assist with

If you have persistent tightness, cramps or referred pain, dry needling may offer the relief you need.

Real-Time Ultrasound Machine (RTUS)

Our latest addition to our clinic is this wonderful machine. The RTUS is used to assess and train a person’s deep core muscles (transversus abdominis/multifidus) and pelvic floor muscles.

This machine works just like the one for pregnant women, but the emphasis is on muscles. The screen will show the specific muscles and then the training will be directed by one of our qualified physiotherapists.

The RTUS is ideal for:

  • People with neck pain and lower back pain
  • Pre and Post-Pregnancy
  • Pre and Post-Spinal Surgery
  • People with Incontinence (Stress and Urgency)
  • Women with organ Prolapse
